I think of a healthy coral reef like an underwater universe. Such a wild, diverse seascape illustrates how complex, delicate, and show-stoppingly gorgeous life on earth can be. In that way, for me, the image of a thriving coral reef embodies the opposite of despair. The truth is, there is more love, beauty, strangeness, pain, and mystery in this world than any one human being could possibly understand. The universe as we know it is brimming with unknowns. But personally, I find that so comforting. Because even when our vision is skewed toward the darkness, even when hope is most elusive, there is always more light shining on us than we could ever see ourselves. There is always more at play: change doesn't stop and the surprises keep coming. There is always more.
