I started this portrait of Ram Dass shortly after his death on December 23rd, and have continued to work on him across the timeline of this pandemic. His expression here is blissful as he recognizes his physical life coming to an end. Unable to dress himself, his oversized shirt is just a drapery of convention, his blotched and wrinkled skin and unkempt whiskers, just aspects of his Earthly body. And yet in that same expression there is a heightened focus and inner grin, giving the viewer access to his awareness. The spiritual infiniteness and wisdom achieved through pure consciousness, loving awareness.
