In America, patriotism is generally aligned with values that emphasize the autonomy of the individual, such as liberty. Given the need to physically distance ourselves (and the way it requires communities--workplaces, schools, churches--to temporarily fragment) I wanted to create an image that emphasized a different side of patriotism: One associated with making sacrifices to protect the community, literally withdrawing from a community to protect it.
