E Pluribus Unum

I wanted to create a flag that represented what we as Americans could and should be working towards, which is a more unified, just, and caring society. I wanted incorporate the jumbled, mish-moshiness of all the different people that make up the American population, so I replaced the stripes with tangled hands and arms. By showing the hands reaching out and interlocking fingers, I wanted to present the idea that if we set aside our differences and start working together, our country will be a vastly better place. I decided to include the American motto "E Pluribus Unum" (out of many, one) to reinforce this idea. In lieu of 13 stars representing the original colonies, or 50 stars representing the states, I decided to depict the Big Dipper and the Little Dipper, of which the North Star is a part of. I chose these constellations because the North Star is a very important part of our cultural history, what with Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. Another reason for including the night sky was to bring to mind how we all exist on the same land and see the same stars, no matter who you are.
