In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, our food system has been put to the test. Meat processing facilities everywhere have been shut down - leaving empty beef, poultry, and pork sections in grocery stores world wide. The unsafe conditions, such as stress, lack of fresh air, and close proximity, in slaughterhouses make for a breeding ground of virus susceptibility for both the animals and workers involved. In fact, most detrimental viruses have started with animals, including COVID-19, AIDS, and Influenza. If we continue to let these slaughterhouse conditions develop without intervention, it is not a question of if, but when, a new outbreak of animal-borne illness starts in the United States. We must start recognizing factory farming system improvements, shutdowns, and moving towards plant-based diets as some of the ultimate preventative measures from the spread of viruses. Freedom for these animals means freedom for us.
