Heal-thy Self

The work is showing how complex and tangled woven yarns of issues can tie us all in these depressing times. We are entangled in all these uncontrollable waves of thoughts and emotions which most often than not, have hindered our outlook on life. This work is centered around setting boundaries and goals for one’s own nurturing and improvement. It is about taking ownership of our own health and recovery, whether that be learning to properly dress a wound long forgotten, following through our commitments day in and day out, focusing on day by day basis. Untangling the yarn is as much about celebrating the inner strength and resilience while coping with different things as it is about being an active part of the resolving or healing of the issues. More about solutions, so to speak than the problems. There is an enormous amount of research showing the benefits of knitting to be more than just a creative pursuit. They show that knitting has physical and mental health benefits, including slowing down the onset of dementia, helping combat depression and also as a distraction to chronic pain. One of the studies by Harvard Medical school’s mind and Body institute, 2007, found that knitting lowers heart rate, by an average of 11 beats per minute, and induces an “enhanced state of calm,” similar to that induced by yoga. If desired so, it can be a social activity, helping those with tendency to isolate, find company of knitting inclined persons and overcome loneliness.
