Into the unknown

As part of a small series I call “spatial disorientation” this painting depicts the feeling of being lost or entering a space unknown where you might not feel so comfortable. Spatial disorientation is the inability to determine ones position, location, and motion relative to their environment. In this painting, a woman opens a door revealing to herself a dark void or another dimension unbeknownst to her. To further play on the idea of being disoriented I made her significantly larger than the door, but also opening the door from an angle that doesn’t quite make any sense. This play on size was inspired by the popular story of Alice in Wonderland where she drinks a potion that makes her small and eats a snack that makes her larger than life itself. Spatial disorientation is not a common topic brought up in mental health discussions and my hope is that it opens up conversation for a broader range of people.
