Mixed Up
This illustration is inspired by Picasso’s weeping woman series of paintings and drawings. Picasso’s images of suffering and grief seemed like an appropriate reflection of how people are struggling with the current crisis. Whether you have experienced illness, personal loss, economic strife or are struggling with mental health issues, everyone is affected by this global shutdown. The newspaper texture in the background is a reference to a collage technique used in Picasso’s cubist work but also refers to the current deluge of media, much of which only serves to heighten anxiety. The cubist approach of showing multiple views of a subject simultaneously also highlights the different moods and emotions we are all experiencing at once. Finally, the main message here is that you are not alone, we are all going through this together.
