Since quarantine orders have been instituted around the world, activists worldwide have reported an alarming rise in domestic violence - for instance, the number of domestic abuse victims killed almost doubled in UK, and the number of domestic abuse cases have risen nearly 40% in the US. The National Domestic Violence Hotline in the US, which typically receives up to 2,000 calls per day, now say many of theirs calls report that abusers use the pandemic as an excuse to further control, abuse, and stop their victims from leaving them. Unfortunately, the media often discloses these statistics but does very little to actually protect victims. Media needs to do a better job at addressing abusers directly with a message that, pandemic or not, there’s NO EXCUSE FOR ABUSE!
