Piece 1 The Bonita Chola
In the Global South and Global North, BIPOCs are more likely to die from the corona virus this is probably higher when you include people’s intersections like disability, gender, class and sexuality. We know that the virus has reached indigenous communities in Latin America, mirroring how small pox was brought to them 500 years ago by the conquistadors. In the UK, Retired Windrush nurses, most of whom old enough to be my grandmother and thus vulnerable to die from covid-19 or from deportation, have been asked by the government to help out on our NHS wards. Most of the medical staff in the UK who have passed have been BIPOCs. New York now has more corona virus cases than any other country in the world, a city with a high BIPOC population. Our news and social media timelines are being flooded with Black people not getting the proper care and treatment by medical staff and dying. People who look like me are perishing. I am told the virus is neutral, it does not treat everyone the same... why? . 'The Bonita Chola archives images of women activists and role models from indigenous and black communities in the Abya Yala. Communities which have been historically erased and ignored. Using my mobile phone only, i evokes collective memories and stories in the form of accessible digital collages. These are available for communities to reconnect with grassroot movements globally. The work explores constructions of identity, focusing on my inner thoughts and feelings.
