Proserpina

This image was printed in my studio and circulated at the 2017 Women's March. It is based on my own hand. At the time it embodied a gesture of grief, but the gesture also pulls directly from Bernini's Rape of Proserpina. It then was reproduced as a relief sculpture, it's material is polished enamel on gypsum cement. The work measures 23.5 x 28 inches. In it's simplist interpretation is is simply a gloved hand. While in many ways these bas-relief sculptures do not translate well as photographs, this gesture I think best reflects a communal sense of grief and loss. It is a work I always feel pulled back to. My husband and I moved to Hong Kong July of 2019 and find ourselves back in Los Angeles after a death in the family during this pandemic. After bearing witness to the protests and unparalleled activism for democracy in this region I have been inspired to continue producing work with an underlying motivation to inspire a shift in our collective thinking towards one of empathy.
