Punchinello In Crisis: Held
This painting of Punchinello being raised or lowered into a manhole by other masked Punchinelli is part of a series of paintings ("Punchinello In Crisis") that continue my exploration of the experience of epidemics ( HIV and now Covid). The picture plane is located well into the activity, thereby dragging the viewer into the arabesques of the tragic space. The encircling figures ignoring the drama of succor constitute a chorus of rejection. The Cuban writer Arenas said the hardest thing about America is that instead of attacking outsiders we just ignore them. I suggest with this painting now during the pandemic even more than ever that we are all living suffering ignored.
