Quarantine Dreams, Alaska

While in isolation, we can’t help but think of memories—beautiful memories of the past repeating over and over like a movie, memories spoken through family members in video chats and also, visions of the future, of what we hope for. This piece conveys a hopeful, empowered Alaskan going through COVID-19. Both past and future are nestled in her hair - the warm, fuzzy good ol’ days spent with good people; then in contrast, looking forward to finally getting to embrace a friend/family member. The little mini illustrations could also be interpreted as video chat vignettes. I wanted to illustrate Alaska in subtle ways - the Alaskan state flower, Forget-Me-Nots (also tied to the memory aspect), the Big Dipper on the mask, the “Alaskan flag blue” of the shadows, mountains on the book the grandma is reading to her grandkids. Overall, these good thoughts of the past and future are ways we could get through this pandemic. <3
