In a bullfight, the querencia is the section of the ring the bull claims as his territory: his found home in the unfamiliar space. If it is a strong bull, he will return to--or defend--it during the fight. This painting began by thinking of strong symbols of cities we love that are being cornered and challenged by COVID-19. But, we have not yet been destroyed. The bull is the image that came to me. This painting, for me, is the bull captured just at the moment before he either recoils from defeat, OR he throws his head back and whips his foe into the abyss, saving his territory in the background. In the top right is an orb representing the coronavirus. In the far left is any city we are fighting for today. The bull, in the center, is the figure for us as we are still arrested by fear of the unknown yet constantly ready to trample what threatens to bring us down.
