Mayling Gonzalez' "Save the Workers; Eat the Rich." is a call for social change. It aims to advocate, on behalf of the working class, for healthcare, wages, and all other social safety nets necessary to survive the Covid-19 Pandemic. The political establishment of the United States has historically rewarded the rich with prestige and monetary bailouts. Meanwhile, the working class is left impoverished, with little to no access to social mobility. The 2020 Covid-19 global pandemic reveals just who is essential to the survival of the human race. It is the low-wage workers, along with the healthcare professionals. And in time of crisis, they should be the ones who receive monetary relief from the government, not the corporations. "Eat the rich" is a phrase that has begun to gain traction on social media. It expresses the growing frustration among the working poor, who see the government get behind all types of monetary relief for the rich. Yet, when the poor demand social safety nets they are labelled as "lazy," or worse: "communists." Gonzalez' painting is a call to reward the working class who are ensuring our survival. We must tax the rich, and the multinational corporations. The government must provide for the people who are fighting this pandemic either on the frontlines, or by simply doing their small part and staying home.
