Self-(Care)
Self- was a series that opened my line of inquiry within neuropsychological processes and was most focused on the endless capitalist cycle: Work for a corporation; drive significant profit to that corporation while sustaining a menial salary in return; suffer and share the burden of the corporation and bring that stress into your personal life; "reduce" that stress by spending money through Yoga, a face-mask, drinking, or a $75 therapy session; go back to work. Self-(care) spends its time reflecting on the latter half of the trap and forces the viewer to self-engage, reflect, and either further commit to the cycle or break from it entirely. The works scale, towering at 7', is confused by the placement of the mask, meaning most viewers have to duck or bend downwards to interact with it. This movement - and the commitment implied - simulates our willingness to compromise our general satisfaction in order to simply exist within a system.
