This is a Translation of the Truth

I am a 16 year old living in the center of a global pandemic. The suffering of the youth is undoubtedly more invisible than the suffering of adults, essential workers, and the economy, for our voices are smaller. We are easy to ignore or patronize for our reach is shorter, but on and on we suffer. The truth is in the shattered and broken spirit of the young, numbed by exposure to disaster and death since the start. Strong human connection and endless experience distracts teenagers from the reality of the world we have been forced into. Our suffering looks different than most. It is not unemployment or late rent, but the sleepless nights of dangerous thoughts. We may not fall ill with coronavirus, instead with the forceful awakening of mental illness that has always possessed the youngest generation. With the distractions that keep us alive brutally stripped away, we are left alone with a translation of the truth to torture our distressed adult minds in our childhood bedrooms.
