This piece is a call for unity. Our lungs – one of the primary organs affected by COVID-19 – are also a powerful symbol. Though the right and left lungs are physically separated, they must work as a united whole to keep us alive. Similarly, we may be physically separated, but we are deeply together in our efforts. As a current medical student, I have been inspired by how my mentors, colleagues, peers, family, and community have come together around this crisis. We each have a role to play. This collective sense of unity is an outburst of light, brightening these dark times. We are together apart.
