Hard to believe, but I created this piece “Workers” back in 2002 as part of a series which included Muslim Widows,Hindi Brides, Zapatista Women; all the women of the world were portrayed with their mouths covered— I was making the statement that they can see clearly what is going on in the world, yet there are forces continually trying to silence them. In contrast, I created a piece called “White Zombies” portraying Western women with eyes covered in dark sunglasses— blind to the plight of their sisters— yet with lips revealed.
