This piece is meant to bring attention to the unsafe conditions in prisons, jail, and ICE detainment facilities during COVID-19. The detained and incarcerated are some of the most vulnerable members of our society and the violation of their rights is rampant. How we take care of the most vulnerable reflects our values, especially how we value and respect human life. In light of COVID-19, we need to protect the most vulnerable among us even more. All people have a basic right to safety and their health. Holding people in the crowded, unclean, conditions that we are is a human rights issue. It’s a humanity issue. And we should question the value system that allows people to be treated this way.
