Children In Cages
I am in pursuit of helping bring forth awareness about children being kept in cages as these inhuman events are being allowed to occur within the border of the country. I am in pursuit of this because, as a minority myself, it brings me deep pain, seeing those seeking a better life in this country being neglected and treated as if they were animals in cages. They are humans too and there should be a policy that requires humane treatment of all people. Humans should not be held like animals in cages or be separated from their families. Those affected by this issue are immigrants coming from central America as they are seeking refuge and opportunities in this country. The change I hope to see is for a law that follows better guidelines for how to treat these people that are detained in the borders. A policy which would allow them a better environment rather than cages and for their families to be reunited instead of being separated. Families should not be separated, especially children from their families as they lose sight and memories of them over the period of time they are taken away becoming more like strangers. My artwork expresses this need for change as it illustrates all the horrific conditions that these children have to undergo. Through the use of symbolism I am able to convey loss of memories, family separations, sickness without help, and being stuck in cages. These are some of the outcomes from these tragic occurrences happening in our borders which leads me to question our abilities as humans and “how can we just let this cruelty happen?” I am passionate about this issue because as a minority it is painful to see people from the same background encounter and endure such horrid conditions. By bringing forth these symbols in my artwork I hoped to bring forth awareness to this issue and inform people of such occurrences that are happening in the country that need to be addressed more and changed.
