Overfished
This piece is a parody of a “Goldfish” crackers carton, but instead of a happy goldfish wearing sunglasses, is an illustration of a commercial fishing boat pulling up a net full of goldfish and some larger marine animals such as whales, dolphins, and sharks. Commercial fishing nets kill over 300,000 large marine animals each year, and Overfishing is putting some sharks at risk of extinction. Commercial fishing is a massive ocean polluter; “More than 100 million pounds of plastic pollution enters the ocean each year from lost fishing gear” - The Nature Conservancy. Abandoned fishing gear can continue to trap and kill marine life that gets caught in them, and they also destroy sensitive habitats.
