I created this piece to illustrate the need for gun reform, and specifically the threat firearms pose to children. Guns remain mostly unregulated by the federal government, which allows any person to purchase and use a gun, even if they have a mental health condition or have committed a previous crime. This is very dangerous as these guns can be used to harm others or oneself; a combined 96% of gun deaths are from suicide or homicide (Giffords). Of these many incidents of violence, a number have occurred in school buildings, and many children, some not even old enough to read, have suffered a premature death at the hands of an irresponsible gun owner. We need laws to regulate gun ownership now to prevent the future homicides of children.
