In a 2021 episode of the animated reboot of Muppet Babies, Gonzo wants to wear a dress and be a princess. In the episode titled “Gonzo-rella”, the Muppets are preparing for a fantasy sequence where the boys are knights and the girls are princesses. Gonzo sees a shiny dress he wants to wear, but is told he can't be a princess because he's a boy. Some people were outraged by the episode and complained that it was changing Gonzo into a trans character, despite previous examples of Gonzo walking through doors labeled “Whatever” instead of the gendered bathroom options of “Women” and “Men”. If our children cannot see all possible versions of themselves in media, how will they feel safe out in the world? Part of unfking the world is doing away with such bias and judgement.
