Victory Vaccination
The model for this poster is my close friend who has been working as a nurse practitioner in the Covid tent at Harborview hospital in Seattle since the pandemic began. It has been a new level of intensity in a job that already held grief, loss and exposure. She is uncomfortable with the word hero, and says she just feels grateful that she could do her job through this. But I think there is nothing that defines heroism more than choosing the hardest work at the heart of a crisis and leaning in. She took an extra shift to organize a vaccination clinic for her fellow health care workers when the vaccines were first available. The tone of hope and joy in her voice as she recounted happy tears and celebration as they administered the first doses to her colleagues still puts a lump in my throat. I chose a reference photo from when she was still pregnant with her now 6 year old son because it is important for people to see the vaccine associated with pregnant women. It is safe and recommended for pregnant women, which is not widely known. We as a society are very protective of pregnancy, and I believe that seeing the vaccine and pregnancy associated positively together helps our brains fit the vaccine into the "safe" category. As more people are vaccinated and the infection numbers are dropping my friend is able to work a more reasonable schedule so she can have time off with her wife and small child. I would be delighted to help spread the message supporting the vaccine that is allowing that for her, and keeping her safe.
