What Makes A Man

When my (now 16 year old) brother and I were toddlers, we would dress up in my princess costumes and have beauty pageants. Even into elementary school, I'd put Henry in my tennis uniform and paint his nails and do his makeup and call him Penny. It was hysterical to us and harmless fun. As we grew older, our notions of gender were shaped by the world around us and we were told masculinity meant unflinching and unemotional, and most importantly that it rejected things that were deemed to be "for women" (because they were lesser somehow. To do something like a girl was a bad thing and an insult.) For this piece, I wanted to create a commentary on gender roles, on clothing, etc. It's *reflective* of when we were kids and there was no backlash to my brother wearing a dress of mine. The smears of the mirror represent how those memories are tainted now knowing how our world punishes and despises men for expressions of femininity. Misogyny is deep-rooted in American society and it’s damaging to everyone.
